Fort Pickett based Engineers learn chainsaw safety
Fort Pickett based 157th Engineer Platoon (Quarry Detachment) learns proper chainsaw safety and usage as part of their annual training at the installation, May 14. Representatives from Fort Pickett’s Fire Department and Forestry Department taught the course which lasted a full day. During the morning classroom portion, soldiers from the 157th learned proper maintenance procedures and valuable safety techniques for chainsaw use. The second half of the day put the classroom training to use by cutting up a pine tree in one of the training areas. Each Soldier put on personal protective equipment consisting of Kevlar pants, gloves, ear protection, hard hat and face shield and cut up sections of the trees. The purpose of the training was to familiarize the Soldiers with the use of the chainsaw. This training adds another skillset for the 157th since tree cutting may be a mission on Fort Pickett and during state active duty.
