Virginia Guard commemorates 66th anniversary of D-Day with special observance event in Winchester

Maj. Thomas D. Howie’s nephew Thomas Howie Payne and his wife Diane of Arlington add soil from Saint Lo where Howie lost his life while leading his unit to secure the town as Col. Brice Houdet, the French Military Attache, looks on. The red oak tree was donated by the Citadel Alumni Association and was planted June 5, 2010 in Howie’s name at the Cherry-Beasley Readiness Center in Winchester. (Photo by Sgt. Andrew H.
