Maj. Gen. Daniel E. Long, Jr. sworn in as adjutant general of Virginia
Maj. Gen. Daniel E. Long, Jr. takes the oath of office as the adjutant general of Virginia from Deputy Secretary of the Commonwealth Christie Heath July 14 at the Patrick Henry Building in Richmond as his wife Diane looks on. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Long’s appointment to lead the Virginia National Guard July 10. Long enlisted in the Virginia Army National Guard in 1964 and commanded at every level including an engineer company, a combat engineer battalion and an infantry brigade. He served as the assistant division commander for maneuver of the 29th Infantry Division, and deployed with the 29th as the deputy commander of Multinational Division North, Operation Force, Bosnia Herzegovina in September 2001. He also commanded the 29th Infantry Division from September 2002 until September 2004. Additionally, Long commanded Task Force Care/Katrina in Louisiana and served as the deputy director and director of the Department of Defense Project and Contracting Office in Iraq, 2004 through 2005.
