Task Force Red Dragon Troopers honored in Suffolk

Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to the Suffolk-based Bravo Troop, 2nd Squadron, 183rd Cavalry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team receive the Virginia Governor’s National Service Medal during a ceremony Jan. 21, 2023, in Suffolk, Virginia. Col. Christopher J. Samulski, 116th IBCT commander, presented the awards and thanked the Soldiers for their service. Delegate Clinton Jenkins and Gene Garland, military liaison for U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, were also on hand to recognize the Soldiers’ service. In addition, Lt. Col. Corey Lindsey, 2-183rd commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Latane Gilliam, command sergeant major of the 2-183rd, presented a number of Soldiers with Gold Spurs, often referred to as “Combat Spurs,” which are earned by cavalry Soldiers for their combat deployments. The Soldiers were part of more than 1,000 Virginia and Kentucky National Guard Soldiers who mobilized as Task Force Red Dragon, and they conducted a security mission for Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa from November 2021 through September 2022. The Virginia Governor's National Service Medal recognizes the service of the men and women of the Virginia Army and Air National Guard called to active federal duty since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
