Van T. Barfoot, who received the Medal of Honor for his actions fighting German tanks and soldiers in Italy in 1944, and went on to serve during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, eventually served as an advisor to the Virginia Army National Guard. The Virginia National Guard’s Fort Pickett will officially be redesignated Fort Barfoot in honor of the World War II Medal of Honor recipient with extensive Virginia ties.
