Artillery Soldiers represent modern military at Jamestown history event

Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to the Norfolk-based 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team represent the modern military and blank-fire with an M119A3 howitzer during a comparative artillery demonstration at Jamestown Settlement’s annual Military Through the Ages March 19, 2023, at Jamestown, Virginia. Maj. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, the Adjutant General of Virginia, presented his challenge coin to the Soldiers in recognition of their outstanding support, and he also was the reviewing officer for the parade of reenactor units.

The VNG traces the traditions of Citizen-Solider service to the settlement’s founding and considers Jamestown to be its birthplace. Since 1607 when Capt. John Smith organized a militia to defend the colony, there has not been a day without a military presence in Virginia to defend freedom at home and overseas.
