D-Day valor, sacrifice remembered on 79th anniversary

Members of the Virginia National Guard pay tribute to the valor, fidelity and sacrifice of the Allied Forces who participated in the June 1944 invasion of Normandy and commemorate the 79th anniversary of D-Day June 6, 2023, at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia.

 

Maj. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, the 28th Adjutant General of Virginia, delivered remarks recognizing veterans and placed a memorial wreath with Governor Glenn Youngkin and retired Maj. Gen. Craig Crenshaw, Virginia Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs, and the 29th Infantry Division Association also placed wreaths, and all recognized the World War II veterans in attendance. The Troutville-based 29th Infantry Division Band performed ceremonial music and provided a color guard and fife and drum team. Soldiers assigned to the Bedford-based Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team served as guards at the Overlord Arch.
