Governor honors Virginia Guard Soldiers for service in Iraq

Maj. Gen. Daniel E. Long, Jr., the Adjutant General of Virginia, congratulates a Soldier from the Lynchburg-based 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 116th Brigade Combat Team for his service in Iraq during the unit’s Freedom Salute held Jan. 9, 2010 in Roanoke as Gov. Bob McDonnell presents the Virginia Governor’s National Service Medal to another Soldier. Approximately 300 Soldiers from the battalion returned to Virginia Aug. 25 after serving in Iraq since March 2010. A group of approximately 70 Soldiers from the battalion returned to Virginia Aug. 17. The battalion operated out of Contingency Operating Base Adder in Southern Iraq with the mission of securing resupply convoys along the main supply routes in the central, southern and northern sectors of Iraq in order to prevent anti-Iraqi Forces from disrupting theater sustainment operations.
