Zahm takes command of 34th CST from Mecadon

Lt. Col. Benjamin Zahm takes command of the Virginia National Guard’s Fort Pickett-based 34th Civil Support Team from Lt. Col. Thomas Mecadon during a ceremony Aug. 22, 2025, at the VNG Sgt. Bob Slaughter Headquarters at Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia. Brig. Gen. Todd Hubbard, the VNG Director of the Joint Staff, presided over the traditional exchange of colors signifying the transfer of command from Mecadon to Zahm. First Sgt. Wesley Heims, the 34th CST’s senior enlisted leader was the keeper of the colors for the ceremony. The 34th CST can identify unknown substances, assess current and projected consequences, advise an incident commander on response measures and assist with requests for additional state support.
