Soldiers conduct close quarters marksmanship training in preparation for duty in Iraq

Soldiers from the Virginia Beach-based Troop C, 2nd Squadron, 183rd Cavalry, 116th Brigade Combat Team conduct close quarters marksmanship training May 13 at the Fort Picket Urban Assault Course. The training uses simulated munitions similar to civilian paintball weapons, and the Soldiers wear face masks for safety while on the course. Soldiers from the unit are conducting pre-mobilization training at Fort Picket in advance of their scheduled active duty mobilization for service in Iraq. Approximately 830 Virginia Army National Soldiers in units based in the Hampton Roads area, Fredericksburg and Christiansburg will begin federal active duty beginning June 1, 2011 with the mission of conducting convoy security and base defense operations in support of Operation New Dawn.
