Senior government officials and Virginia Guard leaders visit Operation Renew
Government officials from the Commonwealth of Virginia and the City of Petersburg, along with senior leaders from the Virginia National Guard visit Operation Renew in Petersburg Aug. 28. Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Marla Graff Decker, Petersburg Mayor Brian Moore, Petersburg Chief of Police John I. Dixon, III, and Maj. Gen. Daniel E. Long, Jr., the Adjutant General of Virginia, had a front row seat to see Airmen from the Virginia Beach-based 203rd RED HORSE Squadron demolish derelict buildings associated with the drug trade. Operation Renew is a program that provides military engineer assets to assist communities in reclaiming control of known drug trafficking areas and is conducted under the supervision of the Virginia Guard Counterdrug Task Force and in coordination with the City of Petersburg and local law enforcement. Twelve Airmen from the 203rd have targeted a total of 13 structures for demolition between Aug. 19 and 30 using heavy equipment and hauled out the debris in dump trucks. (Photo by J.
