Va. Guard engineers support Battle of Fredericksburg reenactment

Virginia Guard Soldiers from the Bowling Green-based189th Engineer Company, 276th Engineer Battalion drop mobile bridging bays into the Rappahannock River Dec. 7 in preparation to support Civil War re-enactors during the observation of the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Fredericksburg scheduled for Dec. 8. The event commemorates the first amphibious assault undertaken while under fire in U.S. history when engineers from the Union Army built a pontoon bridge while under fire from Confederate Soldiers. Once completed, the Union troops moved across the bridge and moved to occupy the city. The bridge constructed by the 189th Engineers will be crossed by Union re-enactors to commemorate the original crossing of the Rappahannock 150 years ago. (Photo by Staff Sgt. Terra C.
