by Virginia Guard Public Affairs

23 volunteers from Fort Pickett and surrounding community help with reservoir maintenance and improvement April 29, 2015, in celebration of Earth Day at the Fort Pickett Reservoir, Blackstone, Va. The Virginia National Guard Environmental Office hosted the event to raise awareness of the National Public Lands program, which provided grants for improvements along the reservoir’s banks and surrounding habitats. Volunteers policed the area of trash, hauled four cubic yards of crushed stone to serve as a foundation for a tiered walkway to the embankment, covered the stone with mulch and dedicated a sign. The sign provides information about the reservoir and the relationship it has with the surrounding animals, habitats and community.
