by Virginia Guard Public Affairs

Virginia National Guard and Virginia Defense Force personnel represent the modern military at Jamestown Settlement’s 40th Anniversary Military Through the Ages March 16-17, 2024, in Jamestown, Virginia.

VNG Soldiers assigned to the Norfolk-based 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team blank-fired an M119A3 howitzer during a comparative artillery demonstration, aviation crews with the Sandston-based 2nd Battalion, 224th Regiment, 29th Infantry Division conducted a flyover with four UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters and three different ensembles of the Troutville-based 29th Infantry Division Band performed throughout the weekend. Members of the VDF displayed historical items and educated attendees about VDF missions and capabilities.

Maj. Gen. James W. Ring, the Adjutant General of Virginia, visited troops to thank them for supporting the event, promoted a 29th ID Band Soldier and presented his challenge coin to individuals in recognition of their outstanding support. He also was the reviewing officer for the pass in review of reenactor units.

The VNG traces the traditions of Citizen-Solider service to the settlement’s founding and considers Jamestown to be its birthplace. Since 1607 when Capt. John Smith organized a militia to defend the colony, there has not been a day without a military presence in Virginia to defend freedom at home and overseas.
