Gillis retires after more than 41 years of service - Sept. 7, 2024

Brig. Gen. Doyle Gillis Jr. celebrates more than 41 years of military service with family, friends and fellow service members at a retirement ceremony Sept. 7, 2024, at the Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia. Maj. Gen. James W. Ring, the Adjutant General of Virginia, presided over the ceremony and presented Gillis with multiple awards and recognitions for his decades of service.

Gillis served as the Virginia National Guard’s Assistant Adjutant General for Army Strategic Initiatives since July 2021. He also spent the last six months serving as the Deputy Director of the Interagency Working Group for the Multinational Security Support Mission to Haiti.

Gillis served in a variety of command and staff assignments at the company, battalion, brigade and state level. He served as commander of 1030th Transportation Battalion, deputy commander of the 183rd Regiment, Regional Training Institute and the commander of the 329th Regional Support Group in a traditional duty status while serving as the Virginia Army National Guard G1 assistant chief of staff for personnel in a full-time status. He deployed three times serving as a fire team leader during Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada, a strategic operations planner in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and as a combat advisor team commander in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq.
