Soldiers from the Virginia National Guard's Woodstock-based Company B, 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team provide color guard support for the unveiling ceremony for General Peter Muhlenberg’s ‘Grand Division’ Color of the 8th Virginia Regiment Oct. 12 in Woodstock. Former Secretary of the Army John O. Marsh, Jr. and retired Brig. Gen. Theodore G Shuey, Jr, former commander of the 116th IBCT, provided remarks during the event. Muhlenberg was an American clergyman and soldier during the American Revolutionary War who was authorized to raise and command the 8th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Army after being personally asked by George Washington. The regiment was involved in many major battles including the Battle of Brandywine and the Battle of Germantown as well as the Battle of Monmouth. Virginia Guard units based in the Shenandoah Valley trace their lineage back to the 8th Infantry. The silk flag has faded from its original salmon-red color to a golden hue, the flag descended in the Muhlenberg family line for more than 200 years.
