Ground breaking held for Public Safety Memorial - Jan. 3, 2014

by Virginia Guard Public Affairs

Senator Tim Kaine, Governor Bob McDonnell and Governor-Elect Terry McAuliffe ceremonially break ground on the Commonwealth Public Safety Memorial Jan. 3, 2014, in Richmond. Virginia is one of only six states in the nation lacking a monument to public safety heroes, and the state-level memorial will honor public safety officers killed in the line of duty. Eighteen Virginia National Guard Airmen from the Virginia Beach-based 203rd REDHORSE Squadron killed in an airplane crash March 3, 2001, are among the 832 public safety officers who will be honored when the memorial is completed. For more information about the memorial, visit the Virginia Public Safety Foundation web site at www.vpsf.org/index.html. The 203rd members were returning home after completing a two-week military construction project at Hurlburt Field, Fla. when the C-23 Sherpa they were flying in crashed in a cotton field near Unadilla, Ga.
