by Virginia Guard Public Affairs

Soldiers and Airmen assigned to the Virginia National Guard’s Fort Pickett-based 34th Civil Support Team practice moving their seven-person strike team and equipment by helicopter transport May 10, 2018, at Camp Pendleton State Military Reservation in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The training was part of Vigilant Guard 18-3, an emergency response exercise with more than 2,000 National Guard personnel from six states and Washington, D.C., working to improve their ability to respond to a natural disaster and enhance relationships with local, state and federal emergency response partners. The mission of a National Guard civil support team is to support civil authorities in the event of a domestic chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear incident with the identification and assessment of hazards, advice to civil authorities and facilitating the arrival of follow-on military forces.
