VNG helps reunite veteran with dog tag lost in Vietnam War
Juergen Hynes, a Vietnam Veteran whose dog tag was lost during a mortar attack in 1967, is reunited with the dog tag during a ceremony Sept. 23, 2019, at the Cherry-Beasley Readiness Center in Winchester, Virginia. Lt. Col. Steele McGonegal, commander of the Winchester-based 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, presented Hynes with the dog tag during a ceremony with other 3-116th Soldiers and a representative of Veterans Affairs. Thought lost forever, the dog tag was purchased on eBay by someone in the United Kingdom and eventually made its way to office of the Virginia Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs. Hynes, who served with 1st Cavalry Division, was injured and evacuated by the mortar attack, which killed one of his fellow Soldiers.
