Maj. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, the Adjutant General of Virginia, reads Gen. Douglas MacArthur's Sept. 2, 1945, speech during a ceremony commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II Sept. 2, 2020, in Norfolk, Virginia. The event, titled “A Better World Shall Emerge: Commemorating 75 Years Since the End of WWII,” took place on the deck of the USS Wisconsin, a sister ship of the same class as the USS Missouri, where MacArthur originally gave his speech following the Japanese signing of the document of surrender to the Allied Powers. The ceremony was presented by the Virginia WWI & WWII Commemoration Commission and was the culminating event in Virginia’s statewide commemoration of the 75th anniversary of World War II.
