by Virginia Guard Public Affairs

Virginia National Guard Soldiers and Airmen assigned to the Fort Pickett-based 34th Civil Support Team conduct a field training exercise March 16, 2021, near Charlottesville, Virginia. In the training scenario, civilian law enforcement officials discovered a possible clandestine laboratory, and the 34th CST was brought in to assist with the incident. Members of the survey section conducted room searches, gathered simulated samples of potential hazardous materials, took photos and then the samples were evaluated by the analytical section for chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or explosive threats in order to provide the incident commander with information about potential hazards. The 34th CST supports first responders during potential hazardous materials incidents involving possible CBRNE threats and can identify unknown substances, assess current and projected consequences, advise incident commanders on response measures and assist with requests for additional state support.
