Virginia National Guard Soldiers and Airmen assigned to the Fort Pickett-based 34th Civil Support Team conduct their training proficiency evaluation Nov. 16 and 18, 2021, in Henrico County, Virginia, and at Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia. During the TPE, the CST conducted two full-scale training exercises responding to a scenario involving a mock chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or explosive threat. The team conducted reconnaissance and sample collection missions at multiple locations, using manned survey teams as well as a specially-equipped robot. The also simulated a “man down” scenario. The unit conducts their TPE, evaluated by U.S. Army North, roughly every 18 months. The 34th CST can identify unknown substances, assess current and projected consequences, advise an incident commander on response measures and assist with requests for additional state support.
