Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by- step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-test are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module, or if you need
to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also
provided to the facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they
can best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests.
Read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

What I Need to Know
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
the Performing Mensuration and Calculations. The scope of this module permits it
to be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the
diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.
The module is divided into three lessons, namely:
• LO 1 – Select measuring instruments;
• LO 2 – Carry out measurements and calculation and
• LO 3 – Maintain measuring instruments.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. Identify object/s or component to be measured
2. Obtain correct specifications from relevant source
3. Select measuring tools in line with job requirements
4. Select appropriate measuring instrument to achieve required outcome
5. Obtain accurate measurements for job
6. Perform calculation needed to complete task using the four mathematical
fundamental operations addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (x), and
division (÷)
7. Use calculation involving fractions, percentages and mixed numbers to
complete workplace tasks
8. Self-check and correct numerical computation for accuracy
9. Read instruments to the limit of accuracy of the tool
10. Ensure proper handling of measuring instruments to avoid damage and
clean it before and after using.
4

Lesson
Performing Mensuration and
4 Calculations
In almost everything you do, you perform even simple calculation and
measurement. Although you have computer skills, it does not mean you must
depend all the measurement and calculation in computer. There are cases that
you must do it manually to determine the possible result or output.
Mensuration is a process of measuring and determining the value, length, width,
thickness, weight, and area of a surface or an object.
Calculation is also a deliberating process that transforms and calculate one or
more inputs into results and to determine mathematical in terms of numbers and
amount.
What’s In
In your previous lessons, you were taught how to input data into computer using
different application software. Can you name some application software that can be
used to perform calculation and measurement?

Notes to the Teacher
1. Read and understand the lessons properly.
2. Find out what you already know by
understanding and answering learning activities
in this lesson.
3. Review the previous lessons and practice what
you have learned in a real-life situation.
