Module in TVL11 – ICT

(Computer Systems Servicing)
1st Semester – Week 6

Developer

Department of Education • Schools Division of Tabuk City

What I need to know

Welcome to the third week of Computer Systems Servicing! But before we

continue, here are some information you should know:

For the facilitator:

As the facilitator of this module, kindly orient the learner on how to go about in
reading and answering this learning material. Please be patient and encourage the
learner to complete this module. By the way, do not forget to remind the learner to
his/her notebook in answering all of the activities found in this module, unless stated
otherwise.

For the learner:

This module contains training materials and activities for you to know the types
of computers. This module will help you achieve the required first competency in
Computer Systems Servicing. This will be the source of information for you to
acquire knowledge and skills at this level of competency. The aid of this material
helps you gain the competency independently at your own pace.

This module has a challenging activities & assessments to nurture you for
further development. It covers the knowledge, skills and approaches required to
complete the competency. You are required to go through a thorough reading and
understanding towards the end of the module. In each learning outcome, learning
elements and reference materials are available for your further reading to assist you
in the required activities.

You are expected to finish the following:

LO 3. Set router/Wi-fi/wireless access point/repeater configuration

Objectives:

• Identify the different types of modular box

• Know how to configure a modular box
• Know the parts of a modular box
What’s In

The raceway and patch panel are the key points to networking, and the
modular box is just synonymous to the convenience outlet in electrical term.
Give their pin assignments of the keystone jack in the box provided.

What’s New

The modular box is a stuff where you get an internet source.

Name the parts of the ethernet modular box.
What is it?

LESSON PROPER Modular box

It is a surface mounted box used in a commercial and industrial building to
cleanly attach network cables. It is commonly used in a structured network. Fig. 1
shows Modular box .

Modular Jacks & Plugs

This type of connector is designed to make secure and reliable input/output
connections. Many of our modular jacks and plugs offer a unique locking system that
prevents both mis-mating and accidental unplugging resulting from shock and
vibration. Shielded and unshielded plugs are manufactured in a compact, one-piece
construction, with preloaded contacts, providing a space saving, quick-to-install
solution offering increased design flexibility. These connectors are used in many
different applications, including data communications, consumer devices and
industrial. Fig. 2 shows modular jacks and plugs.
Figure 2 Modular Jacks & Plugs
Configuring Modular jack
1. Strip approximately 1.5 inches of jacket from the twisted pair cable.

2. Separate the twisted wire pairs from each other, then untwist each pair from
each pair. Straighten wire ends out as much as possible.
3. Remove the protective cap of the modular jack.

4. Once the protective cap has been removed, you will notice that there is wire
configurations printed near the termination slots. If you are given a choice
between A and B configurations it simply pertains to T68A and T568B
configuration. Choose whichever color configuration you would like to use, just
be sure to remember the configuration.

5. Use a punch down tool to attach the twisted pair firmly in your modular jack.
6. Attach the modular box on the rear port (110 type insulation displacement
contacts) of patch panel.
7. Test the configuration.

What’s More

Activity 1
Identify which of the two figure is a male or female keystone jack. Write your answer
inside the box provided.

Assessment I
Insert the wires to its proper location inside the tooth of the modular box.

Activity II
Briefly explain the importance of a modular box in 2-3 sentences.

Assessment II
Describe in 2-3 sentences the difference between an outlet and a modular box.
Activity III
Assume that you have a desktop in your room, and the location of the router lies
beside the entrance door of your house. Layout a sketch of the outlet of your
modular box.

Assessment III
Give the numbers and color code of the keystone jack .

What I can do

Given an office layout plan, assign a modular box by inserting an asterisk(*).

Modular box is a surface mounted box used in a commercial and industrial
building to cleanly attach network cables. It is commonly used in a structured
network. Keystone wall plate. It is used in a commercial and industry buildings to
cleanly attach network cables to a modular box. It also called as face plate.

A modular connector is a type of electrical connector for cords and cables of

electronic devices and appliances, such in-computer networking,
telecommunication equipment, and audio headsets. Probably the best-known
applications of modular connectors are for telephone and ethernet.

Assessment

TRUE OR FALSE:
Write T if the statement is TRUE and F if FALSE on the blank
provided _______1. A modular box is synonymous to an electrical outlet.
_______2. A modular box is used for telephone and ethernet.
_______3. In using a modular box, it’s simply a plug and play.
_______4. In networking, modular box is used for offices.
_______5. Modular box is good for high rise buildings.
