CSS 2 Q1

This document contains a pretest and posttest on setting up a computer server. It also includes learning activities that teach the differences between peer-to-peer networks, client-server networks, workgroups, domains, and local networks. Practice tasks ask about defining peer-to-peer and client-server networks and their features. The main differences highlighted are that peer-to-peer networks do not require a central server while client-server networks store files on a centralized server, making them more secure and efficient especially for larger networks. Both network types allow sharing of resources between connected computers.

Practice Tasks
Practice Task #1

1. What is a peer-to-peer network and its features?

Peer-to-peer network is where two or more computers are connected together without needing a file
server to be part of the network
2. Why do we need to setup a network?
It is very simple and there is no need for a special network operating system. Access to data can
be controlled by setting the sharing permissions on individual machines.
Practice Task #2

1. What is a client-server network and its features?

In a client server network, the files will be stored on a specialized computer called a server.
It ensures security and almost all data is stored in a central location.
2. Why do we need to setup a network?
So that you can more strictly control each user, network security is controlled centrally and all files
are stored in a central location. This method is also more efficient.

Practice Task #3

1. A specialist network operating system is needed. CD

2. All files are stored in a central location. CA
3. Backups and network security is controlled centrally. CA
4. Because each computer might be being accessed by others it can slow down the
performance for the user. PD

5. Does not need an expensive server because individual workstations are used to
access the files. PA

6. Files and folders cannot be centrally backed up. PD

7. Network peripherals are controlled centrally. CA
8. No need for a network operating system. PA
9. The server is expensive to purchase. CA
10. There is little or no security besides the permission. PD

Guide Question:
1. What are the differences of peer-to-peer and client-server network?
 There are many differences between peer-to-peer and client-server networks but the
important ones are that in client-server files are stored in a central location while
peer-to-peer each pc has its data. Client servers are more stable than peer-to-peer
networks. Lastly, a client-server cost more time and resources to set up and
maintain on the other hand peer-to-peer server is easier to set up since it does not
require specialist knowledge.

2.) What do you think is the importance of peer-to-peer network and client-server network?
 They both allow each other to make resources available to other computers. Their
importance depends on the situation, when at home, a peer-to-peer network is
usually used since it is affordable and there are only a few users, while when
working in an office with more than ten people a client-server network should be
used for it provides better security and efficiency.
