B. INFORMATION SHEET:
LOCAL AREA NETWORK
A local area network (LAN) is a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited
area such as a residence, school, laboratory, university campus or office building and has its network
equipment and interconnects locally managed. By contrast, a wide area network (WAN), not only covers a
larger geographic distance, but also generally involves leased telecommunication circuits or Internet links.
CABLING
Early LAN cabling had generally been based on various grades of coaxial cable. Shielded twisted
pair was used in IBM's Token Ring LAN implementation, but in 1984, StarLAN showed the potential of
simple unshielded twisted pair by using Cat3 cable—the same simple cable used for telephone systems.
This led to the development of 10BASE-T (and its successors) and structured cabling which is still the
basis of most commercial LANs today.
While fiber-optic cabling is common for links between switches, use of fiber to the desktop is rare.

TRANSMISSION CONTROL PROTOCOL (TCP) / INTERNET PROTOCOL

(IP)
The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is one of the main protocols of the Internet protocol
suite. It originated in the initial network implementation in which it complemented the Internet
Protocol (IP). Therefore, the entire suite is commonly referred to as TCP/IP. TCP provides reliable,
ordered, and error-checked delivery of a stream of octets between applications running on hosts
communicating by an IP network. Major Internet applications such as the World Wide Web, email, remote
administration, and file transfer rely on TCP. Applications that do not require reliable data stream service
may use the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), which provides a connectionless datagram service that
emphasizes reduced latency over reliability.

LAN CONNECTION SETUP - WINDOWS 7

Use the following steps to setup your LAN connection in Windows 7, when your computer is the
device plugged in to your wireless radio or POE.

1. First, go to the start menu and into Control Panel.

2. Once in Control Panel, if you are in Category view, click

on the View by: drop down menu, and select Large icons.

3. Now that you are in Large icons view, find and double
click on Network and Sharing Center.
4. Now that you are in Network and Sharing Center, click on the "Change adapter settings" link on the left.

5. In the Change adapters settings screen, find and right click on

your Local Area Connection, and left click on Properties.

6. In the Local Area Connection Properties window, highlight

Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and click on the Properties
button.

7. In the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties

window, you will need to select "Use the following IP address"
and "Use the following DNS server addresses:". Type the IP
address, Subnet mask and Default Gateway.

8. Once the settings have been entered in, click ok on the Internet
Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window, then click on
close on the Local Area Connections properties window.
At this point the Local Area Connection should say connected. See
if you can browse to a web site at this time. If you can, your setup
is complete.
LAN CONFIGURATION (PEER TO PEER)
Steps/Procedure:
1. Connect the Ethernet cable to the two desktop computer units on Network Interface Card of both
Computer units.
2. Go to the control panel of the 1st Unit.
3. Under Network and Internet click View network status and tasks.
4. Click Change Adapter Settings.
5. Right-Click the Ethernet Icon then choose Properties.
6. Choose Internet Protocol Version 4 then click the Properties.
7. Then input your desired IP address for example 192.168.0.50, press tab on the keyboard after typing
to get the correct Subnet Mask.
8. Click OK to continue.
9. Click OK to remove the Ethernet properties box.
10. Then Repeat steps 1 to 9 in the 2nd Unit but change the last part of IP address like 192.168.0.51.

WIDE AREA NETWORK

A wide area network (WAN) is a telecommunications network or computer network that extends
over a large geographical distance. Wide area networks are often established with leased
telecommunication circuits.
Business, education, and government entities use wide area networks to relay data among staff, students,
clients, buyers, and suppliers from various geographical locations. In essence, this mode of
telecommunication allows a business to effectively carry out its daily function regardless of location. The
Internet may be considered a WAN.
Related terms for other types of networks are personal area networks (PANs), local area
networks (LANs), campus area networks (CANs), or metropolitan area networks (MANs) which are
usually limited to a room, building, campus or specific metropolitan area respectively.

A WA N (Wide Area
Network) is a communications network that spans a large geographic area such as across cities, states, or
countries. WANs often link multiple smaller networks together including local area networks (LANs) or
metro area networks (MANs).

USING INTERNET VPN FOR WIDE AREA NETWORKING

Being the world's largest WAN, the Internet can be used for long distance communications just like X.25,
Frame Relay or other private networks.
Some companies set up their own private virtual private network (VPN) servers and use VPN connections
over the Internet for protected communications between sites.
Although VPNs provide reasonable levels of security for business uses, a public Internet connection does
not always provide the predictable levels of performance that a dedicated WAN link can.
WIDE AREA NETWORK CONFIGURATION
Steps/Procedure:
1. Connect the Ethernet cable from the 1st desktop computer unit to the internet router/modem.
2. Connect the Ethernet cable from the 2nd desktop computer unit to the internet router/modem.
3. Go to the control panel of the 1st Unit.
4. Under Network and Internet click View network status and tasks.
5. Click Change Adapter Settings.
6. Right-Click the Ethernet Icon then choose Properties.
7. Choose Internet Protocol Version 4 then click the Properties.
8. Then input your desired IP address for example 192.168.0.50, press tab on the keyboard after typing to
get the correct Subnet Mask, and press tab on the keyboard to enter the IP Address of the gateway
which is 192.168.0.1.
9. Click OK to continue.
10. Click OK to remove the Ethernet properties box.
11. Then Repeat steps 1 to 9 in the 2nd Unit but change the last part of IP address like 192.168.0.51.
