THE DESKTOP ICONS


An icon is a small figure on a computer display that you use a mouse to point to and
click to command the computer.
Once you install an operating system, eg. Windows 10, an array of icons will appear on
your windows desktop screen. There are also icons which you will notice that there is a small
arrow, which this is known as links or shortcuts.
To access this icon, you can double-click on a desktop icon to launch that program,
folder or file. There are some common desktop icons which are shown below. Let’s do this!

ICONS REPRESENTATIONS
Files
The icons shown on the left represent a file. When you double-click the
icon the file will automatically open in the program to which it was
created. The picture on the left shows a notepad and an MSWord
document. You noticed that the icon has no small arrow appears,
meaning these two icons were originally created and saved in the
desktop. If the user wishes to delete or it was deleted, so actual file is
also deleted.
Folders and Disk Drives
The icons that are represented here shows a shortcut to a folder. When
you double-click this icon, you will be redirected to the actual files of this

folder. Same as the icons like “computer shortcut”, when you double-
click this, the window explorer will allow the computer to display the
content pertaining on the disk drives and hardware.

Recycle Bin
The desktop icon on the left is called the Recycle Bin which is shown as a
waste paper basket with the recycle symbol on it.
Recycle bin window will be launched once you double-click the icon which
will allow you to permanently delete or restore files.
Programs
Here are some of desktop icons pertaining on programs. The sample
icons on the left has an arrow which represents a shortcut file. So, if the
user were able to delete the shortcut, the actual program is not affected.
When double-clicking on this icon, the program will be launched.
For example, if you double-click on the icons to the left you will launch:
1. Microsoft Word 2007 (word processing program)
2. Mozilla Firefox (internet browser)
3. Adobe Reader 9 (to view PDF files)

BASIC PC SHORTCUT KEYS


Below is a list of some of the most commonly used basic shortcut keys that work with
IBM compatible computers and software. It is highly recommended that all users keep a
reference to these shortcut keys or try to memorize them. Doing so will dramatically increase
your productivity.

Besides the special character shortcuts listed here, some are also located on the
number keys (below the F1 - F12 keys). You can enter these special characters by pressing
the Shift key and the number key that has the special character listed on it.

Let Us Apply

Directions: Read the situation below and plan what would be the procedures to be reflected
in your infographic. You can use a separate sheet.

The learners can do this in two ways:


a. If modular students: use paper, pens and color pens
b. If blended students: use MSOffice word application and try using insert tab and look for
shape commands.

Scenario:
You are the owner of the computer shop for typing/encoding jobs. It is one of your
responsibilities to orient or train your encoders in keyboarding techniques. So, in order to
easily familiarize it, you decided to make an infographic that will enable them to be more
efficient and effective in doing their tasks.
