Mutta vaikka hän olisi hyvin saattanut olla vahakuva, kun he vielä
olivat neljän jalan päässä hänestä, hyppäsi hän pystyyn kuin
vieterinukke, kun he tulivat kolmen jalan päähän, ja sanoi nöyrästi,
muttei suinkaan arvokkuutta vailla: »Haluatteko käydä sisään, hyvät
herrat. Minulla ei tällä kertaa ole palvelusväkeä, mutta minä voin
itsekin hankkia teille jotain pientä.»
»Kiitoksia paljon», sanoi Flambeau. »Te olette siis isäntä?»
»Oli jokseenkin pimeä, kun näin hänet», alkoi isä Brown, »mutta
hän oli…»
Niin kuin sanottu, voi todistaa, että hotellin isäntä oli puhunut
totta. Hänen ilmoituksensa, että kokki oli juuri ulosmenossa, toteutui

omituisella tavalla — hänellä oli silmälasit ja leveä, musta…»
Sitten hän heitti oven puutarhan muurin yli, juuri kun kolmas
laukaus tuiskahdutti hiukan lunta ja huurretta aivan hänen
kantapäänsä takana. Enemmittä arveluitta sieppasi hän pienen papin
kouriinsa, heitti hänet hajareisin olkapäälleen ja alkoi juosta
Seawoodia kohti niin nopeasti kuin hänen pitkät jalkansa kantoivat.
Vasta noin kahden kilometrin päässä laski hän pienen toverinsa
maahan. Pakoa ei juuri voinut katsoa arvokkaaksi huolimatta
Anchiseen antamasta klassillisesta esimerkistä, ja isä Brownin kasvot
olivat yhtenä leveänä irvistyksenä.
»En ole varma, että hän…», alkoi isä Brown, mutta keskeytti.
Lordi Pooleyn silmiin palasi taas tuo kylmä ilme, kun hän katseli
pientä pappia. Hän sanoi vain:

Herra Calhoun Kidd oli hyvin nuori mies, jolla oli vanhat omaan
jäykkyyteensä kuivettuneet kasvot, sinisentumman tukan ja mustan,
