What’s In
Computer hardware refers to the physical devices used with your
machines. Hardware is what makes a computer system to work. Without hardware,
a computer cannot function properly. A computer network system is made
up of software and has linked protocols that allow a set of a computer network which
can be used. These two components are complementary and cannot act
independently of one another. In order for a computer to effectively manipulate data
and produce useful output, its hardware and software must work together

What’s New
Understanding Computer Network

A computer network is a telecommunications network that enables sharing of

resources and information. Network is a collection of computers, servers, network
devices or any other devices which are connected to one another to allow sharing of
data, together via communication devices and transmission media. An example of a
network is the internet which connects millions of people all over the world

What is It
Computer network is a set or group of devices computers connected together
for the purpose of sharing resources. The most common resource shared today is
connection to the Internet. It is a collection of computers and devices connected together
via communication devices and transmission media

CLASSIFICATION OF NETWORK

LAN (Local Area Network) a network that interconnects computers within a limited
area. A computer network that spans a relatively small area. Most often, a LAN is
confined to a single room, building or group of buildings, however, one LAN can be
connected to other LANs over any distance via telephone lines and radio waves.

4
WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) is a LAN that uses
no physical wires computers and devices that access a
wireless LAN it has a built-in wireless network card.
A WLAN, or wireless LAN, is a network that allows
devices to connect and communicate wirelessly. Unlike a
traditional wired LAN, in which devices communicate
over Ethernet cables, devices on a WLAN communicate
via Wi-FI.

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) is a network that connects local area network in
metropolitan. It spans over several buildings in a
city or town. Examples of a MAN are the part of
the telephone company network that can provide
a high-speed DSL line to the customer or the
cable TV network in a city. WAN or Wide
Area Network is a computer network that
extends over a large geographical area, although
it might be confined within the bounds of a state
or country.

WAN (Wide Area Network) is a

telecommunications network that extends over a
large geographic area for the primary purpose of
computer networking. Wide area networks are
often established with leased telecommunication
circuits it is the largest type of network that covers
a large geographical area using a communication
channel that combines many types of media such
as telephone lines, cables and radio waves, the
internet is an example of a WAN

PAN (Personal Area Network) is a

computer network for interconnecting electronic
devices centered on an individual person's workspace.
A PAN provides data transmission among devices
such as computers, smartphones, tablets and
personal digital assistants. It is used for
communication among computer and different
information technology devices close to one person.
Technologies such as Bluetooth and infrared communication typically form a
wireless PAN.

SAN (Storage Area Network) – is a specialized, high-speed network that provides

block-level network access to storage. SANs are typically composed of hosts,
switches, storage elements, and storage devices that are interconnected using a

5
variety of technologies, topologies, and protocols.
Cloud computing- it is the on-demand availability
of computer system resources, especially data
storage and computing power, without direct
active management by the user.

VPN (Virtual Private Network) – is an encrypted

connection over the Internet from a device to
a network. The encrypted connection helps
ensure that sensitive data is safely transmitted. It prevents unauthorized people from
eavesdropping on the traffic and allows the user to conduct work remotely it is a
computer network in which some of the links between nodes are carried by open
connections or virtual circuit in some larger network. Internet is an example of VPN
- Internet a global computer network providing a variety of information and
communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using
standardized communication protocols

TYPES OF NETWORK ARCHITECTURES

1.Client/Server network – server or host computers a centralized storage of the

area for programs data and informing also controls access to the hardware.

2. Peer-to-Peer network– it is an internet network which uses each of the network

hard disk and exchange files directly into the internet.

3. Cross over network – connects two computers using cross over UTP cable. This
type of connection does not require a network hub or network switches.

6
FAMILY OF PROTOCOLS

A Protocol family is a group of logical properties within an interface

configuration. Protocol families include all the protocols that make up
a protocol suite. To use a protocol within a particular suite, you must configure the
entire protocol family as a logical property for an interface
A protocol is the special set of rules that end points in a telecommunication
connection use when they communication
● Internet Protocol (IP)– is a numerical label assigned to each device
participating in a computer network that uses the IP for
communication.
● Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is the standard protocol modern
web browsers and the web.
● Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is a standard that defines how
to establish and maintain a network conversation which application
programs can exchange data.
● File Transfer Protocol (FTP) used to transfer computer file between a
client and server on a computer.
● Secure Shell (SSH) is an encrypted protocol implemented in the
application layer that can be used to communicate with a remote server
in a secure way.
● Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) it allows computers to
automatically request and be assigned IP address and other network
settings.
● Domain Name System (DNS) is an application layer protocol used to
provide a human friendly naming mechanism for internet resources.
● Virtual Private Network (VPN) it’s a means of connecting separate
LAN’s though the internal while maintaining privacy.
● Post Office Protocol (POP3) is used to download e-mail from a remote
e-mail server.
● Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is used to send e-mail to a
remote e-mail server.
● Active Directory Domain Services (ADDS) it allows admins to manage
and store information about resources from a network in a distributed
database.
● Open System Interconnection (OSI) is a conceptual model that
characterizes and standardizes the communication functions of a
telecommunications without a regarding to their underlying internal
structure.
● Internet Protocol Configuration (IP CONFIGURATION) a console
application that displays all current TCP/IP network configuration
values and can modify DHCP and DNS settings.

7
● Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) suite of
protocols has become the dominant standard for internetworking
TCP/IP represents a set of public standards that specify how packets of
information are exchanged between computers over one or more
networks

Networking of computers helps the network users to share data files. Network is any
interconnected group of people or things capable of sharing meaningful information
with one another. In a technology context, network is usually short for
"computer network" or "data network" and implies that computers are the things
sharing the meaningful information

11
What’s New
Networking hardware, known as network equipment or computer networking
devices are electronic devices which are required for communication and interaction
between devices on a computer network. The network Tools, Materials,
Equipment and Testing Devices used in Computer Hardware. These are classified
according to their functions and uses.

What is It
Network tools is a handled device that aids in accomplishing a task.
Hand Tools – a tool held in the hand and operated without electricity or other
power.

Crimping tool - is a device used to conjoin two

pieces of metal by deforming one or both of them to
hold each other. The result of the tool's work is called
a crimp
Wire stripper - is a small, hand-held device used to
strip the electrical insulation from electric wires.

Pliers – it is made from metal with insulators in the

handle and are used for cutting, twisting, bending,
holding and gripping wires and cables.
Needle nose plier – used to hold or grip small objects

Wire cutter – used to strip and cut wires.

Punch down tools – this tool is used for inserting

wires in insulation- displacement connector

Philip head screwdriver - has a head with pointed

edges in the shape of a cross, which fit neatly into
the cross slots screw heads allow a tighter fit than a
flat head screw. It is used to loosen or tighten cross
head screws.

Network equipment are tools needed for a special purpose. It is the act of equipping
someone or something.

12
LAN or cable tester - local area network tester or
cable tester is an electronic device used to verify the
electrical connections in a cable or other wired.

Multimeter – is also called tester is a portable

instrument for measuring electrical quantities
directly active as current and potential (voltage) or
passive as resistors, and other capabilities.
Loopback adapter – is used to test the functionality
of the computer ports

Loopback plug - A connector used for diagnosing

transmission problems. Also called a "wrap plug," it
plugs into an Ethernet or serial port and crosses over
the transmit line to the receive line so that outgoing
signals can be redirected back into the computer for
testing
Modular box- also known as face plat. It is used in a
commercial and industrial building to cleanly
attach network cables. It is commonly used in a
structured network. Keystone wall plate.

Patch panel-A patch panel in a local

area network (LAN) is a mounted hardware assembly
that contains ports used to connect and manage
incoming and outgoing LAN cables. Patch panels are
also referred to as patch bays and patch fields

Network Materials

RJ 45 – also known as registered jack is the most

common UTP connector. RJ45 is a keyed connector
can be inserted in only one way

UTP cat5 cable – unshielded twisted pair known as

an Ethernet cable or LAN cable, a Cat 5 or category
5 is a network cable contains 8 wires and has a
specific wire order. If the wires are in a different
order, the cable does not work.

TYPES OF NETWORK DEVICES

13
● Interface Card (NIC) – It is a computer hardware
component that assigned to allow computer to
communicate.
● Hub – Ethernet hub vary in the speed and hub
support. A network hub has no routing tables or
intelligence on where to send
- Passive hub-is just a connector which
connects wire coming from other devices.
- Active hub-that has electronic circuitry
to regenerate weak signals. Active
hubs function as multiport repeaters,
allowing computers to be networked
together in a star topology.

● Switch – switch appears nearly identical to a

network hub. It can be alternative of hub
● Bridge - are also used to interconnect two LANs that
are operating two different networking protocols.
For example, LAN A could be an Ethernet LAN and
LAN B could be a token ring. This type of bridge is
called a translation bridge
Modem (Modulator/Demodulator) converts
analog signal passing through converting it to
digital sound or signal understandable by the
computer
● Router – is a networking device that forwards data
packets between computer networks

● WAPS - Wireless access point - a wireless access

point (WAP), or more generally just access point (AP),
is a networking hardware device that allows other
Wi-Fi devices to connect to a wired network

● Gateway - provides interoperability

between networks and contains devices, such as
protocol translator. It is a node (router) in a
computer network, a key stopping point for data on
its way to or from other network
