Self-Learning Module 7
Proper Storing of hand
tools/instruments
Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:
Welcome to the (Technology and Livelihood Education Grade 9) Self-Learning
Module on (Proper Storing of hand tools/instruments)!
This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.
This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body
of the module:
Notes to the Teacher
This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:
Welcome to the (Technology and Livelihood Education Grade 9) Self-Learning
Module on (Proper Storing of hand tools/instruments)!

LESSON
Proper Storing of Hand Tools and Instruments
From small hand tools such as screwdrivers or
wrenches to large power tools commonly found in
workshops or tool shops, most individuals have
various types of tools at home. Tools from the
basement to the garage are kept all over the house,
but if not stored properly, they will rust and break.
For care and storage, hand and power devices have
different specifications.
What is Storage?
Storage is the process of keeping or putting
something in a special place while it is not being
used. Proper storage is an important factor to
consider for the safety and health of the workers.
There are different ways of storing tools and equipment. Some prefer to store tools
in the basement or in garage while some store tools in the cabinets.
The following are the different storage and how it is being used:
1. Power Tool Storage Rack
A power tool storage rack is a smart solution for keeping your
power tools organized especially if the problem is space. The
power tools is accompanied by a power tool storage rack for
protection.

2. Power Tool Storage Cabinet
It is the best solution for storing power tools and other hand
tools keeping it safe, clean and organized. Some storage
cabinets for power tools come with the capacity to charge.

3. Hanging Tools or Use Tool Storage Drawers
Hanging pegboards on the walls of the work room,
in the garage or basement, is a handy way to keep
tools stored at home. It will keep instruments off
the floor and organized. Use a drawer storage
system for smaller tools and accessories to protect
them from dust.

4. Measuring devices come in cases
Most of the measuring devices come in cases, and in
these cases it is the best practice to store the tools.
The cases also helps protect tools from dust and
airborne contaminants and prevent accidental
physical damage by holding them in a case.

Useful Tips in Storing Instruments
1. Make sure the location is well-protected from disruptive factors. 2. Do not store
precision instruments where they can bump against each other in the drawer. Use
dividers to isolate instruments from each other or position them in padded cases.
Unless they are well-protected in situations, avoid stacking instruments on top of
each other.
3. Keep measuring instruments stored in a place as far away as possible from
vibration and movement. If the storage location is exposed to humidity, use
methods of moisture reduction that can help minimize humidity. Silica gel packets
stored in drawers or kept air-conditioned in a storage room can also significantly
reduce ambient moisture.
4. Always store tools in a dry place. Never leave them outdoors.
5. Precision measuring tools should never be put near any magnetic material such
as a magnetic worktable, to avoid being magnetized.
Below are some simple preparatory steps that should be taken into consideration
inorder to keep tools in good working condition during storage.
1. Clean tools after each use.
After each use, clean them to keep the instruments tidy. To ensure that they are
free of dirt, grease and debris, wipe them down with a rag or towel. Clean every
metal surface with an approved solution and scrape away any soil and dirt if the
instruments need extra care. Before it is placed in storage, completely dry the tool
with a towel or rag. All surfaces should be cleaned and completely dry before
power tools are used.
2. Dispose any broken or defective tools.
Check for damage or flaws as you do your cleaning. If you can't repair a tool, then
throw it away. Do not allow the extra space to be cluttered.
3. Use metal protectant spray on all metal parts.
With a lubricant metal protector spray, coat the metal parts of the instruments.
4. Never store tools near the ground.
Do not put the tools on the ground directly for storage. Set the small hand and
power tools on the shelving.
5. Be creative with storage options.
Store equipment with short handles in a plastic bin or box. Lock long-handled
instruments together in a garbage can when in storage. If not, hang these
instruments on a wall. Place small tools in plastic bins if you are storing tools in
self-storage. In a bin, organize similar-sized instruments together. An additional
layer of security is provided by plastic bins. Also, the bins are easy to stack and
bring to a construction site from the storage unit to a vehicle.
6. Make a list of all items that are stored.
Be sure to mark the contents of the boxes so that you can locate the tool when you
need it. Keep a list of the equipment that you have and where they are kept for
inventory.
