UNDERSTAND
Topic: CONFIRM SERVER SPECIFICATION

Definition of Network Operating System (NOS)

is the software that runs
on a server computer
and enables the server
to manage data, users,
groups, security,
applications, and other
networking functions.
It is a computer
operating system that is
designed primarily to
support workstations,
personal computer and
in some instances,
older terminal that are
connected on a local
area network (LAN).
Designed to allow file
and printer access among multiple computers in a network or to other networks.
It is based on a client/server architecture in which a server enables multiple clients to share and
access resources.

Advantage of NOS
✓ Centrally manage network resources such as programs, data and devices
✓ Secure access to a network
✓ Allow remote users to connect to a network
✓ Allow users to connect to other networks like the internet
✓ Back up data and ensure its availability
✓ Multiuser, multitasking and multiprocessor systems
✓ Supports multiple user accounts at the same time and enables concurrent access to shared
resources by multiple clients.
✓ Allow for simple additions of clients and resources
✓ Monitor the status and functionality of network elements
✓ Distribute programs and software updates to clients
✓ Ensure efficient use of a server’s capabilities
Differences between Network and Desktop Operating System
Network Operating System Desktop Operating System
Supports multiples users Supports a single user
Runs multiuser applications Runs single-user applications
Shares files and folders on a large network Shares files and folders on a small network
with high security with limited security
Designed for a corporate environment serving Designed for a small office/home (soho) with
multiple users with a wide range of needs a limited number of users
Support large number of users
Types of Network Operating System
1. Macintosh OS X – operating
system for Apple Computer’s
Macintosj line of personal
computers and workstations
2. Microsoft Windows Server –
offered by Microsoft and used
as a central database to
manage network resources.
3. UNIX/Linux – is an operating
system similar to UNIX that
runs on many different
computers.
4. Novel Netware – was the first
OS to meet network OS
requirements and enjoy
widespread deployment in
PC-based LANs back in
1980s
The main features to consider when
selecting a NOS include the following:
✓ Performance
✓ Management and monitoring tools
✓ Security
✓ Scalability
✓ Robustness/fault tolerance
One of tasks in confirming client needs is to document the requirements. This may include identifying
and clarifying:
✓ The business cases
✓ Level of services they need
✓ Maintenance and backup requirements
✓ Bandwidth issues
✓ The nature of data (ex. Text, multimedia)
✓ Security needs (ex. Levels of user access and privileges)
✓ Available support resources
✓ Cost or budget
What are Server Specifications?
Server specifications provide detailed information for your server, including dimensions, electrical,
power, temperature, environment and service clearances
Is the hardware and software specifications of your server
Example of Server Specifications is given as follow
SAQ-1: What is NOS?
SAQ-2: What is the basic difference between desktop operating system and server
operating system?
SAQ-3: List and define the basic type of NOS.

Let’s Practice! (Answer this on the Learner’s Activity

and Assessment Sheets)
Directions: Give what is asked in each statement.
1. Give at least ten (10) advantages of NOS.
2. Give the five (5) main features to consider when selecting a NOS.

REMEMBER
If you’re going to install the NOS into more than one server, you can
Key Points1 save time by first copying the distribution CD onto a shared hard
drive. That’s because even the fastest CD-ROM drives are slower
than the network. Even with a basic 10 Mbps network, access to hard drive data over
the network is much faster than access to a local CD-ROM drive.

TRY
Let’s see how much you have learned today!
Let’s Do This! (Answer this on the Learner’s Activity and Assessment Sheets)
I. Directions: Make a web diagram that illustrates the NOS process.
Criteria 5 points 3 points
Accuracy The output is accurately done The output is satisfactorily done
Layout The output is properly laid out and Layout and presentation fairly done
/Presentation satisfactorily presented
Neatness The output is free from any erasures The output has two or more erasures
II. Answer the following by enumerating what is asked in each statement.
1. What are the four (4) types of NOS?
2. Give at least six (6) Hardware Specifications.
3. Give the at least five (5) Software Specifications.
