Creative Commons UK was started at the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy at University of Oxford in December of 2003 - initially Damian Tambini, Christian Ahlert and Yoav Mazeh teamed up to get CC started in the UK. After a while Prodromos Tsiavos joined the team and became the main coordinator of the legal work.

However, due to the multi-jurisdictional nature of the UK, after the Creative Commons UK project got underway, it was generally agreed that there was a need to have two separate projects that took into consideration the differences between English law and Scots law.

The Creative Commons England and Wales (CCEW) project has now replaced CCUK for England and Wales, and has published a full set of licences. Now the England and Wales Creative Commons licences are available, the Scotland ones will follow later this summer.
