We need better error handling in the common-memory patch handler, it's crashing on malformed json requests.

On the frontend, I often see similar due to parsing "", and other cases where we must serialize via input == undefined ? undefined : JSON.parse(input) is common throughout. We should track down where these invalid representations are originating from
