Chrome displays an extra X for search input when inside external panel

A blue X is located next to the expected "clear text" X for search input only when it is located inside an external panel. I'm using latest version of Chrome (Version 32.0.1700.102 m). Doesn't happen for latest versions of IE or Firefox. Not sure about Safari.

The problem here is a documentation issue to avoid the clear x in chrome we degrade inputs of type search to type text see degradeInputs http://api.jquerymobile.com/global-config/ This is part of the auto enhancement process. As you know since you are doing it when outside the page auto enhancement does not take place and you must call everything your self.
There are 2 potential ways to do this. First and easiest you can just change type=search to data-type=search this will work as you expected http://jsfiddle.net/Y33yA/1/
The second option is to call $.mobile.enhanceInputsWithin() your self on the panel contents http://jsfiddle.net/Y33yA/2/

Im leaning towards saying this is not a bug and closing ( though we should add this to documentation on auto enhancement ) but i want to get some other team members first

I agree this is a documentation issue and not something we have to change in the library. I opened jquery/api.jquerymobile.com#250 and am going to close this ticket as not a bug.
