Customizing QueryBuilder

Need some guidance here, I want to load an empty QueryBuilder on initialization(empty rules list). I have a list of columns on my page and I want to add the rules upon a click on that list(as shown in the image

).
Is there a way to achieve this goal?
I have read the documentation but may be its something I haven't understood yet.

var rule = builder.addRule(builder.getModel());
rule.filter = builder.getFilterById('your-filter-id');
rule.operator = builder.getOperatorByType('equal'); // if you want

The two methods getFilterById and getOperatorByType are not in the doc, that's a mistake.
