Coming here from the TAG review for css-color-adjust-1.

I note that "normal" is more or less synonymous with "light", in practice. Why have two values which mean roughly the same thing? Could "normal" be replaced with "light" as the default?

The CSS Working Group just discussed Are normal and light synonymous for color-schemes?, and agreed to the following:

  • RESOLVED: normal and light are not synonymous, they will stay
The full IRC log of that discussion <Rossen_> Topic: Are normal and light synonymous for color-schemes?
<Rossen_> github: https://github.com//issues/5898
<dlibby_> TabAtkins: Answer is no, not the same, not all UAs display on a light background by default
<dlibby_> TabAtkins: despite current browser that ship do this, this is not a requirement
<dlibby_> emilio: tons of things break if you use dark background by default
<dlibby_> TabAtkins: indeed, but works reasonably
<dlibby_> florian: users of console-based UAs tend to expect oddness, VR browsers might not assume this as well
<dlibby_> emilio: how many of these will implement color scheme, and prefers-color-scheme media feature?
<dlibby_> TabAtkins: more VR UAs will show up and assumptions they make are still valid to consider
<dlibby_> fantasai: some UAs are not browsing the web, might be browsing books, requirements different from browsing the web in general
<dlibby_> Rossen_: back to TabAtkins' short original answer: "no"
<dlibby_> Rossen_: perhaps a bit more is needed, proposed resolution is no, due to various requirements across UAs and devices
<dlibby_> Rossen_: other comments, objections?
<dlibby_> RESOLVED: normal and light are not synonymous, they will stay
