    html TidyGUI

    Hello all,

I'm trying to convert some files from html into xhtml with HTML Tidy, GUI
version. It does a great job, except that it uncurls all the quotation
marks, single and dubble. There seems to be no difference between the
various options for character sets (I use UTF-8). How can I keep my smart
    quotes?

    Thanks, Dirk

Are you using the correct (UTF-8, Unicode) values for those characters,
rather than bogus proprietary characters in the #128-#159 range?

Until now I never used any coding as my editor (EmEditor) on Win XP can show
and save any character including Hebrew etc. I tried “ and “
etc. But also this is turned into strait quotes. What other values are
      there?

            The wrong ones. :-)

Seriously, there are lots of ways so-called "smart quotes" can get
mangled by various software; for a case in point, see this page:

Watch full episodes of current and classic NBC shows online. Plus find clips, previews, photos and exclusive online features on NBC.com.

At least as of right now, it's got some oddball characters where
quotes and apostrophes belong, apparently the result of incorrect
            character set conversions.

            Personally, I stick to standard-ASCII straight quotes in my own sites;
they may not be as pretty, but they're safe.
