Can't answer for Mira, but I've done that a few times, going back to
pre-CSS days.
My newsreader very helpfully hides messages and threads I've already
read or killfiled (though I can manually override it). The exact same
behaviour is one such application on the Web.

Sounds like a good use for a user stylesheet for reading usenet on the
web (such as with google groups).

I haven't considered that. In any case, it wasn't an option in 1995
when I implemented it.
