one specific html code not working

I'm taking an online course on web page design. While working on my HTML
    assignments, I've found that one font code,<font size=" ">, doesn't work on
my computer. It makes absolutely no difference what number I put inside the
quotes, the font size doesn't change. This situation occurs whether I open
the file in IE 6, or in the preview pane of my HTML editor (CoffeeCup).

However, I found that when I tried the same file in my old computer, the
font size code worked just fine.

Any idea why this code will work on one computer and not the other? Of
course I know it's a software issue, but that still leaves it wide open.
Also, all the other codes I've used (e.g., font color) have worked just
    fine.

What a splendid well configured computer you have there.

and that's why it's your old computer

Being serious for a moment, it's almost impossible to diagnose that issue
without a URL. It's likely that one browser is able to compensate (error
correct) better (if that's the right word) than the other. However, of more
concern is why you are learning <font .....> in this century. Styling
suggestions are best made with CSS and your course-work tutor should know
    that.

Regarding archaic HTML vs. CSS, I'm taking a basic course on web design
through the local community college. May not be state of the art, but it's a
      start!

I use Mozilla (currently version 1.5) as my browser. Its
preferences include setting a minimum font size, which causes my
browser to ignore requests for smaller sizes.

The Mozilla preferences also allow me to disallow fonts other than
those that I specify. Since I have not tested this feature, I
don't know if this means preserving the default font sizes
specified in my preferences (14 pixels for serif proportional
fonts and 13 pixels for Courier New).

A bit early for Godwin's Law, isn't it? On my news server, yours was
            only the fourth post!

What is there to gain for 'us' by advicing you not to shoot yourself in
              the foot?

This sounds as if you're trying to tell us that you're an HTML
                  Stalinist. But perhaps I'm wrong?

Its the start of bad habbits which will just have to be unlearned later.
