read your log stats, and this:
Why Webbrowser statistics lie and just don't say anything
This outlines an argument
claiming that WWW access statistics can be worse than
meaningless. It is designed to be read by those who
request such statistics, but is also useful for site
administrators.

I'm using this, and there is an option to have a logo only on your
page which you click on to get to the actual count and stats.
It can be set up so anyone can click though and look at the stats
which I needed, but you dont, so look also at...
A free yet reliable invisible web tracker, highly configurable hit counter and real-time detailed web stats.
This might suit your needs better, as you have to use a login and
password to access the stats, and it has an option for the counter
link to be invisible.
Thy're both nice counters, BUT keep in mind that counter stats are
not reliable or accurate, only a rough indication of traffic. You should
also look at whatever stats package your hosting provider has got,
such as Webalizer, etc, and also your raw server logs if you can get
at them. Between all these you should be able to get a good idea of
what is happening on your site.
