    understanding coordinates

    hello. i'm new to html so please forgive my silly question. i'm just having
    a little trouble understanding the map and area tags. i'm going to use this
    basic example to explain my question - <MAP name="htmlref">
    <AREA shape="rect" coords="1,1,10, 20" href="index.htm l">
    <AREA shape="circle" coords="50,50,1 0" href="toc.html" >
    <AREA shape="poly" coords="20,1,40 ,1,30,20" href="banner.ht ml">
    </MAP>
    <IMG src="htmlref.jp g" usemap="#htmlre f">

    how to i determine the coordinates of any particular image, or are these
    coordinates just standard?

    help appreciated. thank you.

    johnny

      That's OK, but I don't understand what it is that you want to know,
      I'm afraid...

      OK, this is known as a "client-side imagemap" (to distinguish it from
      server-side imagemaps).

      What do you mean by "determine" ?

      If you want to make an imagemap in practice, it's probably advisable
      to get some software that makes it for you, via point and click.
      Such things are usually built-in to pointy-clicky web page designing
      packages, but there are also some stand-alone imagemap creation
      utilities available out there.

      If you want to see where those areas come out on your image as
      determined by the specific recipe that you've shown, then you can put
      "title" attributes on each "area", and then several recent browsers
      will happily pop-up the titles as you mouse around over the area.

      This page of mine isn't by any means the latest, but you might find
      the client-side imagemap part of it to be useful?

      If you want to know more, please be a bit more specific in your
      question, is that OK?
