    Help with Frames.

    Morning,

Can you set the frame sizes in the frameset file by say pixels or other
units, instead of the percent unit/value?

    Cheers.

The quick answer is yes - the more informative answer would be that frames
are generally trouble, introducing more problems than they solve, and it's
usually a bad idea to make sites inflexible by fixing their size.

BTW, you can always experiment - try specifying the size in px, pt, in, cm,
mm, or pc (pica)... see what happens.

      Thanks for your Reply. =].

I've often heard that people try to dismiss frames due to the possible
      troubles they cause.
Can you suggest another way i may achive what im after then.

What im trying to do, to make it very simple...

You have your page, thats divided into three section, or frames (verticle).
The middle frame will be fairly thin.

In the first frame on the left, ill have a list. Say a list of ... skills
and your current level at them.

Then in the middle frame youd load lists against the main list. these woudl
purely state a skill level. so say you had 2-3 different jobs, each
requiring different levels. you could then load the job requirement list
against your current skill levels and see where you need to train.

As far as i knew, frames would be the only way i could do this.

      Cheers for your help.

        Easily done with CSS.

Easily done with DHTML. The implementations are varied and depends on
whether you have server-side scripting available.
The only reason you'd have to use frames is if you have no server-side
scripting AND your users don't have javascript (enabled).

You can use pixels, fractions[1] or percentages, but no other units.

If you want to use other units (as em or ex), try SSI and CSS
          (positioning or floats).

          [1] Fraction syntax:
          <frameset rows="2*, 3*"...>

The first row is 2/5 and the second is 3/5.
