Senior leaders and government officials tour Cannon Creek project - July 18, 2012

Senior leaders from the Virginia National Guard and officials from the City of Richmond tour the Cannon Creek Greenway project July 18 in Richmond. Col. Walt Mercer, commander of 91st Troop Command, the Honorable Ellen F. Robertson, Councilwoman for Richmond City Council's Gateway 6th District and Dr. Charles Price of the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club were among the leaders in attendance who toured the site, visited with Soldiers and talked with local news media. The work is part of the Phase II of the Cannon Creek Greenway that will bring the road to final grade in order to prepare the road for paving immediately following the engineers construction. The work being performed is valued at $350,000.

Approximately 40 citizen-Soldier engineers from the Virginia National Guard's Gate City-based 1033rd Engineer Support Company, 276th Engineer Battalion, 91st Troop Command are working on the project during their two-week annual training from July 15-27. The Petersburg-based Forward Support Company, 276th Engineer Battalion is providing logistical support for the units on site and keeping them fed and fueled and additional Soldiers and equipment from the Bowling Green-based 189th Engineer Company will also take part in the mission. The The project is part of the Innovative Readiness Training program that allows engineers to put their military skills to work on community service projects approved by National Guard Bureau.
