VDF recognizes top performers
The Virginia Defense Force Commendation Medal is presented to Sgt. (Va.) Edward J. Turman for outstanding performance of duties and in recognition of his being selected as the VDF Noncommissioned Officer of the Year, and the Virginia Defense Force Meritorious Service Medal is presented to Lt. Col. (Va.) Nicholas A. Christoff for his performance of duties as the VDF officer in charge during the Virginia National Guard's support during heavy snow in January 2016. Both awards were presented April 3, 2016, at Fort Pickett, Virginia.
Full text of Virginia Defense Force Commendation Medal:
Sergeant Edward J. Turman is an exemplary team leader; faithful, dedicated and accountable in all duties. Sergeant Turman’s dedication to his team and the missions of the VDF is unparalleled. His team consistently leads in training attendance; he often transports troops to and from monthly training. Sergeant Turman is trained in all critical mission sets; IMAR, MCP, STARS and HFRR. He assists with preventive maintenance tasks and is involved in the planning and participates in the 4th Regiment’s Community Support Events. Sergeant Turman maintains a professional appearance and military bearing and conducts himself with confidence. In appearing before the NCO of the Year selection board SGT Turman lead in the attributes deemed that of a professional Noncommissioned Officer. He leads by example and well exhibits the actions set forth in the Creed of the Noncommissioned Officer. For these reasons the Commanding General names SGT Edward J. Turman the Virginia Defense Force NCO of the Year 2016 and awards the VDF Commendation Medal. SGT Turman’s devotion to service and professionalism reflects great credit on himself, the Virginia Defense Force and the Virginia Department of Military Affairs.

Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas A. Christoff, Deputy G-3 of the Virginia Defense Force, displayed exemplary and meritorious initiative, judgment, and leadership as Officer-in-Charge of the Virginia Defense Force's State Active Duty in support of the Virginia National Guard's response to Snowstorm JONAS 21-27 January 2016. His energy, decisiveness, judgment, knowledge of the Virginia Defense Force's Civil Support Packages and capabilities, and operational skill enabled the Virginia Defense Force to respond quickly to requests from the Virginia National Guard, successfully fulfill the VDF's support missions, and to accurately advise the Joint Force Headquarters of the VDF's capabilities in SAD. LTC Christoff's skills and actions are an example to all members of the VDF and bring great credit upon himself, the Virginia Defense Force, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
