LOOKING BACK TO YOUR LESSON

A computer is a general-purpose device that can be programmed to carry out a set of

arithmetic or logical operations automatically. Charles Babbage is considered as a father of
modern digital computers. He was well known as a designer of the “Difference Engine” in 1822.
Also, in 1842 he designed a fully automatic analytical engine in performing basic arithmetic
functions. His efforts established a number of principles that are fundamental to the design of any
digital computer.

On week 1, we discussed the classification of a computer that includes the following: size,
functionality and data handling.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, computer has a big role in our daily life. It refers to a meaningful
implementation and utilization of technology in different purposes. It uses for communications,
storing and calculating data and writing a massive document multiple time. Also, computers use
for entertainment value; to play games, watch movies and play music etc.

COMPUTER PERIPHERALS
Computer Peripherals

A peripheral device is an internal or external device that connects directly to a computer

but does not contribute to the computer's primary function, such as computing. It helps end users
access and use the functionalities of a computer.

Common Computer Peripherals

Monitor A computer monitor displays information in
pictorial form.

Keyboard The keyboard is a computer hardware used to

input text, characters, and other commands
into a computer.

Mouse The mouse is used to manipulate objects on a

computer screen

9
System Unit A system unit is the main part of a computer.
It also contains the major parts or components
of a computer.

Printer A printer is a peripheral device which accept

texts and graphics and transfers the
information to paper.

PC Camera A webcam is a video camera that feeds its

image in real time through a computer

Speaker The speaker is used to translate an electrical

signal into an audible sound, speakers contain
an electromagnet.

Central Processing Unit (CPU) It handles and executes all the data and
instructions that the computer receives. It is
also known as the brain of a computer.

10
Motherboard A motherboard is the main printed circuit
board which holds the components of a
computer.

Back Panel Ports

Hard Disk Drive Hard disk drive or HDD is used to strore and
retrieve data using one or more rigid rapidly
rotating platters coated with magnetic material.

Random Access Memory (RAM) RAM is a volatile memory, which means that
the stored information is lost when there is no
power.

Common Types of RAM

• Synchronous Dynamic Random
Access Memory (SDRAM)
• Double Data Rate Synchronous
Dynamic Random Access Memory
(DDR-SDRAM)

11
DDR Information:

Exhaust Fan and Heat Sink A computer fan is any fan inside, or attached
to, a computer case used to cool a particular
component.

Power Supply (PSU) A device that use to supplies electric power for
the internal components of a computer.

Solid-State Drive (SSD) A storage devices that practically function the

same way as hard disk drives. SSD contains
memory chips that store information.

Video/Graphics Card A device that converts data from the system

unit to render an image that displays on your
monitor.

12
Water Cooling The water circulates from the engine to the
radiator, that the heat moves from the hot water
to the radiator, causing the water to cool off.

Computer Hardware

It includes the physical parts or components of a computer, such as the central

processing unit, monitor, keyboard, computer data storage, graphic card, sound
card, speakers.

 Input Devices

Any hardware device that sends data to a computer, allowing you to interact
with and control it.

1. Keyboard
2. Mouse
3. Barcode
4. Microphone
5. Joystick
6. Scanner

 Output Devices
An output device is a piece of computer hardware equipment that uses
received data and commands from an information processing system to perform a
task.
1. Monitor
2. Printer
3. Headset

13
ACTIVITIES

Activity 3: Input and Output Devices

Objective: Identify the input and output devices of a computer
Material: Pen and Notebook
Procedure:
1. Using your pen and notebook, create a venn diagram and identiffy the input and output
devices of a computer.
2. List down the input and output devices.

REMEMBER

Computer Peripherals helps the end users access and use the functionalities of a computer. The
computer peripherals also is divided into two: external parts and internal parts.

The common computer peripherals or an external parts of a computer are the following:
monitor, keyboard, mouse, system unit, printer, scanner, pc camera and speaker.

The common computer peripherals or an internal parts of a computer are the following: cpu,
motherboard, hard disk drive (HDD), random access memory (RAM), exhaust fan and power
supply unit (PSU).

To increase performance and to run more programs efficiently. These are some internal parts of a
computer that we use optional: CD/DVD ROM, FDD, SSD, Video Card, Water Cooling Tube.

Input Devices - Any hardware device that sends data to a computer, allowing you to interact with
and control it.

Output Devices - An output device is a piece of computer hardware equipment that uses received
data and commands from an information processing system
