HOW DO YOU USE THIS MODULE?
Before starting the module, I want you to set aside other tasks that will disturb you
while enjoying the lessons. Read the simple instructions below to successfully enjoy the
objectives of this kit. Have fun!
1. Follow carefully all the contents and instructions indicated in every page of this module.
2. Write on your notebook the concepts about the lessons. Writing enhances learning, that is
important to develop and keep in mind.
4. Let your facilitator/guardian assess your answers using the answer keycard.
5. Analyze conceptually the posttest and apply what you have learned.
6. Enjoy studying!
Expectations - These are what you will be able to know after completing the lessons
in the module.
Pre-test - This will measure your prior knowledge and the concepts to be mastered
throughout the lesson.
Looking Back to your Lesson - This section will measure what learnings and skills
did you understand from the previous lesson.
Brief Introduction- This section will give you an overview of the lesson.
Activities - This is a set of activities you will perform with a partner.
Remember - This section summarizes the concepts and applications of the lessons.
Check your Understanding- It will verify how you learned from the lesson.
Post-test - This will measure how much you have learned from the entire module.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
What is a Computer?
Computer is an electronic hardware device. It operates and functions under the control
of instructions called programs stored in its memory.

Classification of Computer
Classification of computer can vary from different formats, but as to this module, we will
be using the size, functionality, and data handling to classify it.
1. Size
Supercomputers: are the most powerful computer available. These high capacity
computers that run continuously are being used by very large organizations, mostly
big corporations and government institutions. Users of supercomputers include
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Examples are the
following:
Mainframe computers: are less powerful than supercomputers but are capable of great
processing speed, multi-tasking capability, and high data storage. They are mostly used
by banks and insurance companies to process information of depositors, millions of
daily bank transactions, and policy holders. These computers have a specialized wiring
system and usually occupy a large temperature-controlled room. Examples are the
following:
7
Mid-range Computers: are used by medium size companies for specific purposes. They
may be used for certain assembly line operations or manufacturing stages in big
companies. The size of mid-range computers may be as big as washing machine. They
may be a stand-alone system for specialized application including network services.
Examples are the following:
Handheld Computers: are the smallest computers that are designed to fit into one hand
or palm that is why they are also called palm top computers. These computers may
combine pen input, personal organizer tools, and communication capabilities such as
telephone and Internet applications. Examples are the following:
8
Microcomputers: are the most common and widely used computers today which you
can see in homes, schools, and in most businesses. There are two types of
microcomputers – the desktop computer and the notebook computer. Desktop
computers are small enough to be placed on a desk or table but are too big to be
carried around. Notebook computers, also known as laptop computers, are portable,
lightweight, and are easy to carry around. A tablet personal computer is a fancy
notebook that has a swivel design and can accept handwriting using a digital pen.
Examples are the following:
9
2. Functionality
Servers: Servers are nothing but dedicated computers which are set-up to offer some
services to the clients. They are named depending on the type of service they offered. Eg:
security server, database server
Workstation: Those are the computers designed to primarily to be used by single user at a
time. They run multi-user operating systems. They are the ones which we use for our day
to day personal / commercial work.
Information Appliances: They are the portable devices which are designed to perform a
limited set of tasks like basic calculations, playing multimedia, browsing internet etc.
They are generally referred as the mobile devices. They have very limited memory and
flexibility and generally run on “as-is” basis.
Embedded computers: They are the computing devices which are used in other machines
to serve limited set of requirements. They follow instructions from the non-volatile
memory, and they are not required to execute reboot or reset. The processing units used
in such device work to those basic requirements only and are different from the ones that
are used in personal computers- better known as workstations.
3. Data handling
Digital: A computer that performs calculations and logical operations with quantities
represented as digits, usually in the binary number system of “0” and “1”, “Computer
capable of solving problems by processing information expressed in discrete form. from
manipulation of the combinations of the binary digits, it can perform mathematical
calculations, organize and analyze data, control industrial and other processes, and
simulate dynamic systems such as global weather patterns.
Hybrid: A computer that processes both analog and digital data, Hybrid computer is a
digital computer that accepts analog signals, converts them to digital and processes them
in digital form.

Activity 6: #ComputerInTheIndustry
Objective: Appreciate the value of computer in the industry.
Material: Pen and Module
Procedure:
1. Examine the value of computer in the industry.
2. Compose a tweet like statement.
Ex. Computers help the industry to speed up their productions and services which is essential
to remain competitive.
REMEMBER
There are various definitions of computer available in different resources online and
offline, but the common things are the following: (1) an electronic device; (2) operates and
functions because of programs installed; and (3) follows an Input-Process-Output (IPO)
sequence. We can classify computers based on size, functionality, and data handling. Moreover,
computers are so powerful that enabled us to become more effective and efficient in dealing with
our daily activities.
