Learning Task 2:
Directions: Read the information below that will help you learn more about Computer
Data Storage and capacity.

What is a Data Storage Capacity?

Storage capacity refers to how much disk space one or more storage devices
provides. It measures how much data a computer system may contain. For an example,
a computer with a 500GB hard drive has a storage capacity of 500 gigabytes. A network
server with four 1TB drives, has a storage capacity of 4 terabytes.
Without a significant amount of memory, a computer would merely be able to
perform fixed operations and immediately output the result. It would have to be
reconfigured to change its behavior. A modern digital computer represents data using
the binary numeral system. Text, numbers, pictures, audio, and nearly any other form of
information can be converted into a string of bits, or binary digits, each of which has a
value of 1 or 0. The most common unit of storage is the byte, equal to 8 bits.
Data Storage Capacity Measurement
Data storage capacity is measured in bits (b) and bytes (B).  One bit is equivalent to one
single binary value which is either 1 or 0.  One byte is equivalent to 8 bits.   One kilobyte
(KB) is equivalent to 1,024 bytes.  One megabyte (MB) is equivalent to 1,024 KB.  One
gigabyte (GB) is equivalent to 1,024 MB.  One terabyte (TB) is equivalent to 1,024 GB.
One petabyte (PB) is equivalent to 1,024 TB.  One exabyte (EB) is equivalent to 1,024 PB.

MEMORY CARD
A type of storage media that is often used to store photos, videos, or other data in
electronic devices. Devices that commonly use a memory card include digital cameras,
digital camcorders, handheld computers, MP3 players, PDAs, cell phones, game consoles,
and printers. The picture is a MicroSD flash memory card, which is one of the types of
memory cards available. There are a handful of different types of memory cards on the
market, each varying in size, compatibility, and storage capacity.

What are different types of memory cards?

There are three main types in the SD memory card family. SD, SD High Capacity (SDH),
and SD Extended Capacity (SDX). This article details the different specifications of all
three types of SD memory cards and the speed class ratings and compatibilities that are
different with each type.

Central processing unit -It is the part of a computer system that is commonly referred to
as the "brains" of a computer. The CPU is also known as the processor or microprocessor.
The CPU is responsible for executing a sequence of stored instructions called a program.
CPUs are made of silicon which is very abundant in earth's crust and is in the carbon
family. Silicon is first extracted from the earth usually in the form of sand since the
traces of quartz in the sand have silicon- based compounds in them. Processor
performance is usually a number in either MHz (megahertz) or GHz (gigahertz.) That
number represents how many times the internal clock inside the CPU ticks in cycles per
Page 2 of 6
second. The clock inside a 2.5GHz CPU ticks 2.5 billion times each second

Microprocessor frequency specifies the operating (internal) frequency of CPU's core. The

higher the frequency is for a given CPU family, the faster the processor is. Processor
frequency is not the only parameter that affects system performance. Another parameter
than greatly affects the performance is CPU efficiency, that is how many Instructions Per
Clock (IPC) the CPU can process.
The CPU frequency is measured in Hertz. The frequency can also be expressed in:
❖ Kilohertz, or kHz, equals to 1,000 Herts
❖ Megahertz, or MHz, equals to 1,000,000 Herts or 1,000 kHz
❖ Gigahertz, or GHz, equals to 1,000,000,000 Herts, or 1,000,000 kHz, or 1,000
MHz.

In computing, the clock rate typically refers to the frequency at which the clock

generator of a processor can generate pulses, which are used to synchronize the
operations of its components, and is used as an indicator of the processor's speed. It is
measured in clock cycles per second or its equivalent, the SI unit hertz (Hz).

Expansion Card - It is used to give a computer an additional capability such as

enhanced video performance via a graphics card. An expansion card is a printed circuit
board that can be installed in a computer to add functionality to it. For example, a user
may add a new graphics card to his computer to give it more 3D graphics processing
power. Most expansion cards are installed in PCI slots. This includes variations of PCI,
such as PCI-X and PCI Express. Graphics cards may also be installed in an AGP slot,
which is designed specifically for video cards.
Video card (also called a graphics card, display card, graphics adapter, or display
adapter) is an expansion card which generates a feed of output images to a display
device (such as a computer monitor).

HARD DISK
The hard disk drive is the main, and usually largest, data storage device in a
computer.
❖ It can store anywhere from 160 gigabytes to 2 terabytes.
❖ Hard disk speed is the speed at which content can be read and written on a hard
disk.
❖ A hard disk unit comes with a set rotation speed varying from 4500 to 7200 rpm.
Disk access time is measured in milliseconds.

Learning Task 3: Engagement
Directions: Answer the following questions carefully.
1. What is a primary storage? How it is organized, and how is data represented in
primary storage?
2. What are the importance of having an expansion card in your computer?
3. Based on what have you learned about the different types of memory cards,
storage devices and computer processor used in CSS how can you apply this in real life
situation especially if you want to buy a new computer/upgrade a computer? What are
the things that you need to consider first? Why?

Learning Task 4: Assimilation

Directions: Look at the pictures below. Identify the different Storage devices use in
computer.
