System
Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:
Welcome to the T.L.E. CSS Grade 8 Self-Learning Module on Accessing
Information Using Computer and Produce Output or Data Using Computer System!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them
to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:
Welcome to the T.L.E CSS Grade 8 Self-Learning Module on Accessing
Information Using Computer and Produce Output or Data Using Computer System!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an
active learner.

LESSON

LESSON 5: ACCESSING INFORMATION USING COMPUTER AND PRODUCE

OUTPUT OR DATA USING COMPUTER SYSTEM

Understanding Desktop Icons

Any operating system uses desktop icons to graphically represent objects
such as programs and directories. In this lesson, we will focus on desktop icons of
Windows GUI (Graphical User Interface). Desktop icons are known as shortcuts
represented by pictures that indicate the type of program they are connected to.
You can move, duplicate, and delete files to your desktop, which will save time and
amount of mouse click however it must be arranged and cleaned from time to time
to avoid being cluttered.
Below are some common desktop icons.
Program Icons

These icons are positioned at the left side of the screen. Each image has an
arrow at the bottom left shows representing shortcuts to various programs.
Deleting the icon won’t affect or remove the program. These can be open thru
double-click.

Drives and Recycle Bin

Control Panel and Network are used to configure settings in a computer

system. The drive is an immovable medium where you can store and read
information of files and programs. Recycle Bin is a temporary storage area for
deleted files.

Folder and Files

Folder File Word File Excel File Presentation File

Zip File Audio File Video File PDF File

A file is an object that stores data, details, settings, or commands used with
a computer program on a machine. In a GUI (graphical user interface), such as
Microsoft Windows, files are shown as icons that relate to the file-opener program.
Directories
It might be simpler to illustrate a comparison to the directory structure. So
think of your computer as a growing, file-filled space. File cabinet is loaded with
folders and files. That is the basic directory prerequisite. Directories accurately
represent file cabinets. They can hold files and subdirectories.

Managing Your Desktop

Working in a computing environment has a wide variety of tasks and
activities in creating, deleting, moving, editing documents, and other files on a
computer. This could end up being cluttered or misplaced files that could waste
work productivity and cost time.
5S is an organizing concept that helps to maintain your computer files away
from clutter. The following are the 5S and their functions.

1. Seiri – Sorting/Putting things in order

Avoid saving or duplicating files on your desktop. Aside from being cluttered,
this can also add to your space on a drive. Make a folder that segregates one file
to another contain the different types of files.

2. Seiton – Orderliness/ Proper Arrangement

Organized files in a desktop can help in easy finding of files. Each directory
must be linked to the files inside the folder. Filename should be organized by
number or letters so that it can be easily identified.

3. Seiso – Cleanliness
Desktop and directories should be clean to avoid the overloading of files.
Duplicate, old and unnecessary files should be deleted to provide space for
incoming files that will be created, or transfer. Recycle Bin should be emptied
after a month.

4. Seiketsu – Standardize
Apply Seiri, Seiton, and Seiso daily to maintaining a clean, manageable
desktop.

5. Shitsuke – Sustaining/ Discipline/ Commitment.

Training is the key to practice proper maintenance in handling computer
desktop.

Types of Programs & Software

The software connects computer hardware and application software where it
functions as an interface. There are different types of the system software in a
computer namely: application, system, operating software, and programming
languages.
Application Software
Application software contains several programs
which can be divided into different groups for general
purposes and applications. Application software has a
general-purpose to perform a specific job of
processing information for end-users. Example: Word
processing, spreadsheet, presentation graphics
program.

System Software
This system works on the system
management program and system development
program of a computer. This includes managing
hardware, software, and network and data
resource of a computer upon execution of
information-processing jobs. Another function is
to control, maintain the database. It also
manages the performance of telecommunication
networks of a computer. Example: Utilities
System, Network System, and Database System.

Operating System
This system also managed the CPU process
and monitors the computer system's
input/output storage mechanism with services. It
executes the following functions: system and
network communication interface, computer
system hardware control system, file
management, data and software management,
system flow process management, utility support
system. Example: Linux, Windows

Programming Languages
Most of the computer system works
on a wide variety of programming
languages. This helps programmers to
develop a system with the help of a
language translator program that converts
programming into the machine language
instruction codes. Example: Java, HTML,
XML, C++, Fortran and others.
ACTIVITY

A. DIRECTIONS: Based on the situation below, identify what type of 5’s was
applied. Write your answer on the space provided before the
number.

_____________1. Unwanted files were deleted and the important one was placed on a
single folder to avoid the clutter of files on the screen.
____________2. Maintaining the desktop was done every end of the day.
____________3. Every file was stored on their designated folder.
_____________4. Files were named alphabetically or by numbers to avoid confusion
on finding files.
_____________5. In maintaining the stability of the computer system one must learn
how to take care of their computer thru training.

B. DIRECTIONS: Identify what group do the desktop icon belongs to. Write A for
Folder and Files, B for Drives and Recycle Bin and C for
Program Icons.

________1. ________2. ________3. ________4. ________5.

C. DIRECTIONS: Read the statement below and identify whether it is AS

(Application Software), SS (System Software), OS (Operating
System), or PL (Programming Language). Write the correct
answer on the table below.

Type of Software
1. This helps the code convert into a machine instruction code.

2. Examples of this software are Spreadsheet and Word.

3. This software managed the CPU process and monitors the

computer system's input/output storage mechanism with
services.
4. This includes managing hardware, software, and network and
data resource of a computer upon execution of information-
processing jobs.
5. Some of its examples are Linux and Windows.
WRAP-UP

DIRECTIONS: Complete the following chart by identifying the types of software and
write its functions.

SOFTWARE

VALUING

Computer software significantly handled vital functions on the computer

system therefore, it requires a regular update to maintain its good condition.
Likewise, 5S maintains the orderliness of files and folders on the computer or
desktop screen. Considering both the computer software and 5S, how will you
apply the importance of updating the computer software and the 5S both on your
(a) Household Tools or Appliances, and (b) Personal Stuff (e.g. clothing, shoes, bags,
accessories, etc.)?
