What’s In

One sunny afternoon, Jose saw linemen working on the post near to his house. They
were too busy in doing some installations and connecting telecommunication cables. One of
the linemen is Mang Benny, who happened to be his neighbor and his father’s friend. Jose
looked closely at Mang Benny and he could not stop himself from asking what Mang Benny’s
doing out of curiosity. Mang Benny simply smiled at Jose and showed him what he’s doing at
that moment. Here is what Jose found out.

What’s New
After that afternoon, Jose became too interested with the kind of work that Mang
Benny is doing everyday. Jose’s eagerness to learn is very observable as he always visits
Mang Benny and asks him so many things about the nature of his work.

Mang Benny felt so happy about Jose’s attitude towards his work and his willingness
to learn more even at his early age. That is why Mang Benny loves sharing his knowledge to
Jose. That day he shared to Jose everything about computer communications.

Computer Communications

Computers communicate on many different levels and there is a great deal of

variation between the different types of computer systems involved the basic communication
process is relatively uniform and standardized.

Essentially, computers communicate with one another over networks that are
connected via wire or wireless communication methods. There are many different types of
networks, and there are many different types of network-connection methods as well.

There are many types of networks. From smallest to biggest, the most common network types are personal ar

After teaching Jose about computer communications, Mang Benny also asked Jose
to accomplish a simple task. Let us find out if you can help Jose in doing his task.

DSL Modem Setup:

1. Installing Phone Filters

You must install the included Phone Line Filters on every device (phones, fax machine,
satellite receivers etc.) that is connected to the same line as your new DSL.

Install DSL Modem

1. Plug the included Phone Line Splitter into your Wall Jack. If you are going to be using
another device (phone, fax machine, satellite receiver, etc.) plug-in one of your Phone
Line filters into the Splitter and then plug your phone into the filter. On the other side of
the splitter hookup your DSL modem directly with the supplied phone cable. Be sure to
plug it into the Line or DSL port on the back of your modem.

7
2. Make sure your computer is turned off.

3. Take the supplied Ethernet cable and plug it into the LAN or Ethernet port on the back
of the modem. Plug the other end of the cable into the Ethernet port on the computer.

4. Plug the supplied power cord into the modem and then into an available plug nearby.
Once you plug-in the power supply, the modem will turn on automatically. If there is a
switch on the back of the modem make sure to flip it to the ON position.

5. Once the ready, line light on the front of the modem stops blinking, turn your computer
on and you will be ready to surf the internet.

6. If the ready, line light continues to blink for longer than a few minutes and it is
PAST your scheduled due date for DSL, please call our Technical Support.

Install line filters

Every device connected to the phone line at your location must have a line filter
except the DSL modem. Devices that must be connected via a filter include phones, fax
machines, satellite receivers, alarm systems, and dial-up computer modems. Alternatively,
you can use one filter for your entire location. Every device (except the DSL modem) needs
a line filter.

Parts of Installing line filters

Connect the DSL modem

Connect the DSL modem directly (with no filter) to a phone jack using the supplied
phone line cable and to your computer with an ethernet cable (if you are using ethernet).
Plug in the modem power supply. For best performance, use only the phone line provided
with the modem. Locate it away from sources of electrical interference and ensure that it has
good ventilation for cooling.

8
Components of a residential DSL connection

Power up the modem and use the Internet

Turn the modem on using the push-button switch located on the back of the modem.
The lights on the modem should come on right away and within a few minutes they should
turn green. If your modem is from NCF, it will be pre-configured and ready to go. Your
computer should now be able to browse the internet.
Normally DSL modems are left on continuously to ensure your connection is there
when you need it. If you are going to be away from home for an extended period of time it
can be turned off.

Prepare for DSL modem installation

DSL stands for digital subscriber line. DSL uses your existing phone line to send
digital data in addition to the normal analog voice signals (analog means continuously
varying whereas digital data is represented by 1s and 0). The phone line goes from your
home to a central office where the line connects to the phone company's network-by the
way, the connection from your home to the central office is called the local loop.

When you sign up for DSL service, the phone company has to hook up your phone
line to some special equipment at the central office. That equipment can separate the digital
data from the voice. From then on, your phone line can carry digital data that can then be
directly sent to an Internet connection at the central office.

Understanding How DSL Works

A special box called a DSL modem takes care of sending digital data from your PC to
the phone company's central office over your phone line. Your PC can connect to the
Internet with the same phone line that you use for your normal telephone calls you can make
voice calls even as the line is being used for DSL.

9
A typical DSL connection to the Internet.

There are in fact three variants of DSL, each with different features, summarized as follows:
1. Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL). The most common form of DSL, has
much higher download speeds (from the Internet to your PC) than upload speeds
(from your PC to the Internet). ADSL can have download speeds of up to 8 Mbps and
upload speeds of up to 1 Mbps. ADSL works best when your location is within about
two and a half miles (12,000 feet) of your central office. ADSL service is priced
according to the download and upload speeds you want. A popular form of ADSL
called G lite is specifically designed to work on the same line that you use for voice
calls. G lite has a maximum download speed of 1.5 Mbps and maximum upload
speed of 512 Kbps.
2. Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). It is an older technology called a special
type of DSL that works at distances of up to five miles between your phone and the
central office. The downside is that IDSL only offers downstream and upstream
speeds of up to 144 Kbps.
3. Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL). Provides the equal download and upload
speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps. SDSL which is more expensive according to the speed
you want. The closer your location to the main telephone network with the faster
bandwidth that you can get.

Identify Safety Procedures and Potential Hazards for Users and Technicians

Safety in the laboratory and the workplace is an important issue when working on
computers and other electrical devices. General safety guidelines and fire safety guidelines
protect the technician and the equipment.

General Safety Guidelines

 Follow the basic safety guidelines to prevent cuts, burns, electrical shock, and
damage to eyesight. As a best practice, make sure that a fire extinguisher and first
aid kit are available in case of fire or injury.
 Installing network cables, whether copper or fiber-optic, can be dangerous. Often,
cables must be pulled through ceilings and walls where there are unexpected
obstacles or toxic materials.
 You should wear clothing that protects you from these materials. For example, wear
long pants, a long-sleeve shirt, sturdy shoes that cover your feet, and gloves.
10
 Wear safety glasses. If possible, ask building management, or someone responsible
for the building, if there are any dangerous materials or obstacles that you need to
be aware of before entering the ceiling area.

Cable, Cable Cutters, and Cable-Cutting Safety Hazards

All levels of technicians should know the hazards before working with network cables
and equipment. This section describes the safety hazards of working with copper cables,
which, like fiber-optic cables, can be dangerous to handle.

Caution

 When handling cable, always wear eye protection.

 Never touch the ends of any type of cable to bare skin.
 When you cut copper cable, the small copper strands can puncture your skin or cut
you. The small pieces that come off after cables are cut often fly into the air.
 Remember, always wear safety glasses when cutting any type of cable. The cutting
and crimping tools used to repair a set of terminate copper cables can be dangerous if
not used properly.
 Read the instructions that come with the tool.
 Practice using the tool on scrap cable and ask an experienced installer for help if you
need it.

Remember that copper cable conducts electricity. A faulty equipment, static electricity, or lightning can ener
