About The Author
Zak Ruvalcaba has been designing, developing and researching for the Web since 1995.
He holds a Bachelor’s Degree from San Diego State University and a Master of Science
in Instructional Technology from National University in San Diego.

In the course of his career, Zak has developed Web applications for such companies as
Gateway, HP, Toshiba, and IBM. More recently, he’s worked as a wireless software engineer
developing .NET solutions for Goldman Sachs, TV Guide, The Gartner Group, Microsoft
and Qualcomm. Currently, Zak holds a programming position with ADCS Inc. in San
Diego supporting internal .NET applications.

Previous books by Zak Ruvalcaba include The 10 Minute Guide to Dreamweaver 4 (Que
Publishing) and Dreamweaver MX Unleashed (Sams Publishing). He also lectures on various
technologies and tools including Dreamweaver and ASP.NET for the San Diego Community

NOTICE.
Agésilas fut joué pour la première fois sur le théâtre de l'Hôtel de
Bourgogne, suivant toute apparence au mois de février 1666, et non
«à la fin d'avril» comme l'ont dit les frères Parfait [1]. Les funérailles
de la reine Anne d'Autriche, morte le 19 janvier [2], et le deuil que la
cour prit à cette occasion, interrompirent tout divertissement et
durent contribuer au peu de succès de l'ouvrage. Robinet s'exprime
ainsi dans sa Lettre en vers à Madame du 6 mars 1666:

Ne vous mettez point aux fenêtres

Ni n'allez point traîner vos guêtres
Pour voir des masques, ces jours gras,
Bonnes gens, vous n'en verrez pas.
Messieurs les foux de tous étages
Seront une fois de faux sages,
Pour le respect (bien entendu)
Par tout françois justement dû
Aux cendres de cette princesse,
Que nous pleurons encor sans cesse.
Mais vous avez pour supplément
Le noble divertissement
Que vous donnent les doctes veilles
De l'aîné des braves Corneilles:
Son charmant Agésilaus,
Où sa veine coule d'un flus
Qui fait admirer à son âge
Ce grand et rare personnage.

Cette faible louange trouva peu d'écho. La pièce ne suscita ni cabale,

ni libelles, ni parodies: elle tomba obscurément, et nous ne pouvons
même retrouver la trace de cette chute, dont le souvenir ne nous a
guère été conservé que par deux vers d'une épigramme, que Boileau
fit à l'occasion d'Attila [3].
Un concurrent redoutable venait de se faire jour. Agésilas parut trois
mois après l'Alexandre de Racine. «La révolution qui se fit alors dans
les sentiments du public, dit Jolly [4], le parti que prit le plus grand
nombre en faveur du nouveau poëte, forment une époque à laquelle
on peut rapporter la naissance d'un genre inconnu de tragédie, où
l'amour dominoit sur toutes les autres passions. M. Quinault l'avoit
ébauché avec quelque succès, dix ans auparavant [5], mais non pas
avec autant d'éclat.»
«Agésilas, comme nous l'apprennent les frères Parfait [6], n'a jamais
été remis au théâtre.»
Le privilége de cette tragédie a été donné à Corneille le «vingt-
quatrième mars 1666,» et l'Achevé d'imprimer a pour date: «le 3.
iour d'Avril 1666.»
Voici le titre exact de la pièce dans l'édition originale: AGESILAS,
TRAGEDIE. En Vers libres rimez [7]. Par P. Corneille. A Rouen, et se
vend à Paris, chez Guillaume de Luyne, Libraire Iuré, au Palais....
M.DC.LXVI. Auec priuilege du Roy. Le volume, de format in-12, se
compose de deux feuillets, de 88 pages, et d'un dernier feuillet
contenant le privilége.
 AU LECTEUR.
Il ne faut que parcourir les Vies d'Agésilas et de Lysander chez
Plutarque, pour démêler ce qu'il y a d'historique dans cette
tragédie [8]. La manière dont je l'ai traitée n'a point d'exemple parmi
nos François, ni dans ces précieux restes de l'antiquité qui sont
venus jusqu'à nous; et c'est ce qui me l'a fait choisir. Les premiers
qui ont travaillé pour le théâtre, ont travaillé sans exemple, et ceux
qui les ont suivis y ont fait voir quelques nouveautés de temps en
temps. Nous n'avons pas moins de privilége. Aussi notre Horace, qui
nous recommande tant la lecture des poëtes grecs par ces paroles:
Vos exemplaria Græca
Nocturna versate manu, versate diurna [9],
ne laisse pas de louer hautement les Romains d'avoir osé quitter les
traces de ces mêmes Grecs, et pris d'autres routes:

Nil intentatum nostri liquere poetæ;

Nec minimum meruere decus, vestigia Græca
Ausi deserere [10].

Leurs règles sont bonnes; mais leur méthode n'est pas de notre
siècle; et qui s'attacheroit à ne marcher que sur leurs pas, feroit
sans doute peu de progrès, et divertiroit mal son auditoire. On court,
à la vérité, quelque risque de s'égarer, et même on s'égare assez
souvent, quand on s'écarte du chemin battu; mais on ne s'égare pas
toutes les fois qu'on s'en écarte: quelques-uns en arrivent plus tôt
où ils prétendent, et chacun peut hasarder à ses périls.
